Mural Painting Design and Plan Stage

Task 1: Introduction

My chosen theme for my Mural Project is “Racism and Stereotypes”. I chose this certain theme because I believe that it fits the requirements for our project. A) It is appropriate for all ages, B) It can convey a strong message, C) This topic is very close to my heart, and D) In the CIS community, and we must be open-minded! By “Racism and Stereotypes”, I mean that they should be diminished from this world and we should stop condemning people who are different because in the, we are all human! For this particular project, I want to used mixed media, as in; it will be 3D and pop out, to give this feeling like the portrait will come out of the mural and take you. For my materials and tools I plan to use paint, but not just any paint, I will use the special paint that artists’ use for murals. I feel like “Interior Household Paint” will work best because we are painting a wall, and this paint is regularly used for painting walls. I should also bring paintbrushes of all different sizes, for ex. I need a large/wider to create an opaque effect, and then I need a thin/smaller brush for soft strokes and more detailed features. If I am painting, sensibly, I will use the other typical materials such as palettes, water, and tissues. Just like I have mentioned, I will try to achieve making the mural 3D, maybe I might need metal wires or more accurately, use newspapers for papier-mâché. I might also need ladders to reach the taller heights and pliers to bend the wire. Most of these materials I can find in my home, but for the more difficult ones, I would need to buy in National Book Store, or in a hardware store, may it be “Ace Hardware” or Home Depot.

Task 2: Sketches
Task 3:

Task 4:

For my final design, I choose option 1, because I am personally, a minimalist and I enjoy the simple things in life. I also believe that I can convey two messages through this design. This design can tell the audience about equality AND racism, and that’s more than I bargained more. It would also be more reasonable to use a simple design in the limited time we are given; otherwise, if I use a really complex design, I’m afraid that I will not be able to finish it in time. This can also catch someone’s attention with its use of different colors to represent different ethnic groups and it somewhat looks like a rainbow. Going back to using a simple design, I can use my original intention of using opaque colors instead and really make this image stand out. I believe that this is a good choice and the project will be successful.

Task 5: PLAN

Task 6:

In conclusion, I believe that my Mural will be a success because of its sturdy plan and thorough process to come up with. The mural has been thought out carefully, from the research about which paint to use, where to buy it and how to use it. From all the different ideas involving this sensitive topic, we’ve narrowed it down to the most appropriate candidates and narrowed it down even more, to just one. We’ve listed many of its pros and cons and the many attributes it can give to the CIS community.  I have also done the right amount of research for this topic enough to know on what to do and how to do it. After doing all of this, I’ve listed down every step, the estimated time to do it and the materials needed for that certain activity. I conclude that the mural painting will be a success and after thorough consideration of all the possibilities, it would most likely be a SUCCESS. Therefore, I have no worries about the mural painting because I think I have prepared enough for this task. I have also gone through the whole Design Cycle enough to know the exact actions I will be for the entire Create Stage.

After consulting with my group, we decided to use the design that my classmate had made, our topic is world hunger and as you can see; we are making a set of plates, forks, and knifes, but instead of an actual plate, it is an earth. The text on the bottom reads “Stop World Hunger”.
