Katrina Rivera's Portfolio
For this year’s Design Technology class, group of 2015 – 2016, our task is to deliver a good message through mural painting. A mural painting, based on Wikipedia is “any piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling or other large permanent surface” another definition by The Free Dictionary is “ A very large image, such as a painting or enlarged photograph, applied directly to a wall or ceiling.” We are supposed to create a mural painting about social awareness and choose a topic that everyone in school should be aware of, and create a painting that says a thousand words and really move people and affect them to try and change those problems and make a difference. I want to choose the topic of stereotypes, and being defined by them. In today’s modern society, the world is getting bigger and we can never meet everyone face to face and really get to know them, which is why we base our opinions of them through stereotypes. Not everybody can be as open-minded as others. We are just humans with our own biases and pet peeves and sometimes we cannot help being racially offensive. Unless you are mixture of every other race and grew up in every country. Other’s may sometimes feel higher than others and become a little condescending, but it’s human nature to stick with your own kind. I mean ever since the evolution of humans, we had tribes, and even though we were all humans, we still stuck with “our own kind”. It’s this kind of separation that causes war, conflict, and almost every other major problem out there. These stereotypes focus on our differences other than our similarities, but if we looked passed them and worked together, we can all live in a more peaceful and better world. This is why I want to do this topic so badly, because it has been something bothering me for some time now. Just because I was born a Filipino, that does not make me illiterate, just because you were born in the south of the United States, that does not make you a hillbilly, just because you are Asian, you don’t have to live up to everyone’s expectation of you being super smart, just because you were born in the middle east, that does not make you a terrorist, just because you are African, that doesn’t mean you’re poor and starving, just because you’re Mexican, that does not you make you a drug smuggling illegal alien, just because you are French, that does not make you a walking Baggett with a mustache, just because you are attracted to the same sex, that does not mean you cannot have the same rights as a person attracted to the opposite sex, just because you are a politician, that does not make you a corrupt blood sucking vermin. NOBODY has the right to call you any of these; you decide your own faith, and not some silly stereotype, because you are a human, you have a destiny, you decide your destiny, you make it come true, because you can, not because a stereotype says you can’t.
Introduction
IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM
In the CIS community, we are always told to be open-minded at a young age, especially since it is one of our IB Learner Profiles. Cebu International School is an international school where we are taught to accept everyone and look past our differences. Like I have mentioned before, the world would be a much peaceful place. It is never our choice on where how we were born and just because that is how it is, we are not to blame. Some of the biggest historical events/wars were based on racism. The Confederate States of America was because the South of the United States believed that the African-Americans were less than them and that they were more powerful as the “dominant species”, so Africans were because taken from their homeland and being sold as slaves, like dogs, and were treated with no rights. Also, World War 2, The Genocide of the Jews, Hitler killed more than 12 million Jews during WW2, and that was because they were born Jews and had no power to change that, even though, they looked the same, talked the same, and acted the same, they were considered “different”. Some of us are born different and I understand that, but why would you blame somebody for something they have no control over. That is why, I believe that doing this mural is good idea, it will open the minds of the young and new generation, and the world is already starting to take effect; gay marriage has been legalized in the United States, people are more accepting towards trans-genders, women are earning more of their rights. This mural is like a cause-and-effect project, and together, we can make a better world.

DESIGN BRIEF
During my Mural Painting Project, I intend not to exactly solve the entire problem, and create world peace, but I want to at least influence the CIS community enough to make a small change. As a child, this is the least I can do to make a difference, but if this project is successful, then the best possible scenario, is for it to make a domino effect on our younglings, for them to realize that racism is wrong, and also want to make a change, and who knows, maybe in the future they might teach their children that racism is wrong, and that will at least make a small change in the foreseeable future- But, this cannot be achieved if you do not catch the child’s attention first, the mural must be colorful, the colors I intend to blend properly with the use of opaque colors and shadows. I also want the lines to be definite. The message must also be clear enough for a young mind to understand. If I thoroughly work towards my goals, then perfection will be achieved.

Task 1
Measurements:
Width: 2.78 M
Length: 2.71 M

Task 2
My theme is “Stereotypes and Racism” As I have mentioned many times before, this is a grow problem. Yes, times are changing and people’s values are different and opinions are becoming stronger, but as open-minded people grow, close-minded people are growing too. But nobody is born racist; it’s the way we were raised. I can understand if your religion stops you from doing certain things, but you have no right to force that opinion onto somebody, yes I understand if you say it’s their own good, but no is NO. Racism is a growing problem that needs to be solved soon; it will benefit us in the near future. This personally bothers me because in the Philippines, many people are very closed minded towards others, even though there are many foreigners here. For ex; when someone sees a tale white male, they automatically think that they are rich? Why? Just because their country is rich, that does not make them rich! Another reason it bothers me, is because whenever I meet somebody new, and I tell them I am Filipino, they ask questions like; how can you speak English so well? How can you afford to come here? And I am completely exasperated, so that is why I want to make a change!
What is a mural painting?
“Any piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling or other large permanent surface” or “A very large image, such as a painting or enlarged photograph, applied directly to a wall or ceiling.”
Different Art styles that goes with the Theme:
I want to create a simple mural, using opaque colors and reapplying paint again and again to the surface, so that it really stands out from the rest. Maybe I can use fauvism, because it uses vibrant colors and looks very thick. As you can see from the samples above; the one on the left side really uses dark colors, and you can clearly see the boundaries between the colors, even in the different tones. While the one on the right side uses more detail, but less tones and values in the colors. My main objective is to follow the art style on the left because I feel like it gives more of message, as you can see by the joys of the monsters, and the sorrow in the children’s eyes.
Do you think words are stronger than images or images are stronger than words?
Based on research and my own personal opinion, I believe that pictures are stronger than words. Just like the saying, “I picture is worth a thousand words”, a picture can capture a moment in history exactly, while words can only describe it. With words we only talk, but with images we actually communicate. One picture can be worth a whole book. You can never fully capture an image in your head, through words, which is why we show it, and that is why, IMAGES SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS!

Task 3: Interview
Name: Izabella Gudicelli
Good About their Mural Painting Project?
“Our mural used tiles instead of just paint”
Difficulty on the Mural Painting Project?
“It was hard to get the right shapes for the tiles”
Recommendations?
“Be careful when cutting the tiles because you might get hurt”
Name: Alyssa Sacal
Good About their Mural Painting Project?
“It looks nice, because of the four element; air, water, fire, earth”
Difficulty on the Mural Painting Project?
“It was quite hard to reach the higher parts and maintain balance on the ladder”
Recommendations?
“Paint Instead”

Task 4:
What sort of information can you discover that will help you understand about your chosen design style?
Based on research, I have found some useful information on a child’s attention span is +1 of their chronological age, so even seniors to preschoolers can really take a look and understand the message of the art work/mural. Another great deal of information, is the location of the mural, which is in the parking lot, where A) Is right in front of the preschool classrooms, which is my main objective; to inspire the next generation B) It is passed by everyone every day when they are leaving school, so even if you are busy all day in school, you will pass it when you leave.
Message:
The Message that I want to give off, is “Racism is Bad” or “Don’t let Stereotypes Define you”. In the CIS community, we go to an international school where we are taught to accept each other, even though we have our differences, and if little children are already trained to do that at a young age, then I believe that world will be a better place.
Art Style:
For my art style, I am most likely going to choose Fauvism or Pop Art because those are two art styles that really catch people’s attentions using opaque colors, vibrant colors, clear boundaries; they are also fun to create. Fauvism and Pop Art is what I would describe, minimalist art, and I love simplicity, because if we keep it simple, we are most likely to succeed. Even as a person with limited art skills, I believe that if I stick with these art styles, maybe I can pull it off.
Materials:
Paint, Paint Brushes, Glossy Coating, Ladders, Pallet Boards, Water, Cups

Task 5: Prototype
Measurements: Height – 15.5 inches Width – 16 inches
Pasted below are pictures of my prototype. The Prototype is made out of Illustration board and the back is a spare piece of illustration board cut out to make an “L” like kind of shape to hold up the “wall”. The image I have drawn below is a man being split in half, “what they think you are” and “what you want to be”, and then, a message is pasted saying “DON’T LET STEREO-TYPES DEFINE YOU”, which is my whole concept. I honestly like my prototype, image, and idea.

Conclusion
I conclude that this Mural Painting will be successful and that it will be fun. I believe that with the right amount of research, responsibility, punctuality, and attitude, then this project will be a success. I also think that I made the right decision with my chosen art style and theme because I already have many ideas for this one mural, but that also makes it difficult because portraying it to fit the right criterions to make it suitable for all ages is kind of hard. I feel like creating prototype was a success, and that my art idea is very moving, this inspires me to beat the odds and actually make a difference.
Task 6:
-
Project must be colorful
-
Project must have a good message
-
Appropriate for all ages
-
Nice to look at
-
Not sloppy
-
Definite Lines
-
Follows Concept
